Love Should Not Hurt: Letting Go of the Pain to Live in Freedom
by: Erin Sluka

Thank you for visiting!

I am giving away a copy of my new release book. This is not a how-to guide, but more of a way to share my story of my survival as a domestic abuse victim and what it took to leave and stay away from my abuser. It discusses the effects that last a long while after living through such a relationship. I did not heal the right way and I discuss this in my book.

Love Should Not Hurt is not just for victims, but for anyone who is a fan on non-fiction and would like to learn about how one becomes a victim, why we stay, the dangers of leaving and the healing effects after the escape. It is a short read that I hope begins the discussion with someone you may know who is struggling. From my book, I hope it can be used as a starting point to encourage victims and families to seek proper help because without the proper guidance, the effects of abuse are long-lasting and a difficult internal struggle as you adjust to a life of freedom.

I hope you will enter to win and share this with your friends and families. The topic of domestic violence needs a voice and you can be a voice! Without discussions, it remains a topic many don't wish to discuss and solve.

Dear Rich Mullins: Ragamuffin New Release Review

This is a product review for the DVD Ragamuffin

This is a personal review following my DVD review on my Blog, Parenting Healthy.
See the release review and enter to win a copy of Ragamuffin at

Dear Rich Mullins,

We have never met, but you do know me. Our stories are very different, but we are the same. I am of one who struggled so long with a broken past that I had lost faith. As much as I felt I had no one, I truly felt I was so alone that God had left as well. I want to thank you. Thank you so much for your story and I was lucky enough to preview the film, Ragamuffin.

I had heard your music, but never knew your story. My past involves 6 years trapped in a dangerous domestic violent relationship. I was born Catholic and was a girl without a care in the world and one man took that all away. I was isolated by him, but eventually I learned to isolate myself from others as well. What started as a way to hide my life at the time turned into a switch that stuck in the 'On' position for many years even after escaping my abuser and I would keep myself disconnected from loved ones for years. I was around after leaving my abuser, but not connected. I could never find that connection. Just emptiness around others hiding my fear and pain.

To see into the mind and soul of someone like myself while I watched your story was such a blessing. You mention that the more you got out and talked to people the more it would remind you that you have words to say and a story tell. A decade after leaving my abuser, I forced myself out of my own shell and started writing. You wrote music and I wrote a book. I had a story to tell and connections to make again. I had a purpose to find.

Let me thank you in this only way I know how. Thank you for your film and your words in it. You state not only wondered if God loved you, but if he even liked you! In my darkest times while I held my bloody face after a beating I would just become numb to the constant and almost daily pain and wonder that same thing. I abandoned God for years because of what he had done to me and to just leave me there? I blamed him. You say that people use the phrase 'time heals all wounds, but in your case time made them worse". A decade after leaving my abuser I was still afraid. I would shut down and disconnect from my (current) husband and children. It created stress in my marriage and my depression almost did as much damage to me as the abuse itself. You state how you can be near someone-even touching and still feel locked out. I have never heard a better description to how a depressed mind feels at every moment than that. It was that in which I refer to to as a disconnect. I was disconnected. I loved everyone. I loved my family, but I was locked out emotionally.

I married my current husband shortly after escaping my abuser. In fact I dated hime right away, but as you also mention in regards to Jess...When you are with her, you feel something you have not felt in a long felt home. With the stress and loneliness after leaving my abuser, my husband was there for me and that is exactly why I let him in emotionally at the time-I felt at home!

"Did you believe that I loved you?" Thank you for sharing that sermon with us all and thank you for showing us the emotions that brought to you. In the end, if we are asked just one question at the gate, let that be that. Let the one's who suffered like so many, found a purpose and loved everyone despite their pain provide Jesus with the most honest answers over everyone else. Sharing emotions as trapped as we are is so hard. Writing my book was both self-healing and emotional at the same time, but it is my purpose to remind others they are not alone. Thank you for reminding me of that.

Love Should Not Hurt-Book Details

As a Domestic Violence Survivor, I had kept my past a secret from many. I had put on a smile to hide my pain and kept a distance from those who I felt could see through the facade. Eventually, I realized that my emotions were bigger than I could handle on my own and I decided to finally get honest with myself and others and tell my story.

This is a book about escaping the emotional prison to find freedom. Despite what has led you to shut out those around you, this book reminds us that we are not alone.

Steps to reading books online

Are you a creature of habit who wants to start enjoying books online?

If you still prefer to read a traditional paperback and have no desire to download a reading app, then you may not want to read on! I will, however, invite you to order my new book-on paperback- from Createspace or Amazon! Hey-didn't want you to feel like you came to this post for no reason!

If you are ready to read from your device, then follow these steps below and you'll be set!

First, I need to know what device you are using:  tablet, iPad, smartphone, laptop or computer. Just kidding-it doesn't matter! Just want to make that clear!

Reading on Kindle/Ordering off Amazon

Step One: Kindle is the App, Amazon is the store. From any device, you need to go to your App store and download the Kindle App-it's free! It will have this icon:

Step Two: Open the Kindle app that you downloaded and it may say 'Start reading' or 'Register' and you will then enter your Amazon account email and password. Don't have an Amazon account? It's free and easy to set up.

Step Three: Go to your Amazon account page and click on Manage Content & Devices. You should see your device listed along with any books on your shelf after you start downloading. You may have to log out the back in to see the new device added.

Step Four: Head to Amazon, browse books and shop! At checkout, it will ask you what device you want to read on (if you have multiple connected) and voila! After checkout, open that kindle app back up, go to the Library and your book should be there after download is complete!

*Note: Click HERE if you want my recommendation of the first book for your library! Hint: it's my book!

Reading on iBooks or computer/Ordering off Smashwords

Step One: iBooks is the App. Smashwords is the store. If you want to use your iTunes/Apple account for Mac, iPhone or iPad instead of your Amazon account, then your first step is download iBooks and follow registration to log in with your iTunes account. It will have this icon:

If you would rather read a book as a document or .pdf on your laptop or computer, do not download any app. Just move on to the next step.

Step Two: Head to or to my book page there ( and choose your download at the book you want. .pdf is in the 'read online' choice and can be read like a document on your computer. .epub will load into your ibooks shelf and .mobi will load into your kindle shelf.

That is the difference between Kindle and all the other options! When you browse Amazon for books, you can only read from your Kindle App. When you browse books in Smashwords, you have the choice! Amazon will sell you print copies to order whereas Smashnbooks are only digital. You cannot order paperbacks or hardcover books to be mailed from Smashwords.

These are 2 of the major platforms. I will not list the others so not to confuse you. Neither will I go into details of how to move all of your books from one platform to another. Yes! You can take your Kindle and move those books to your computer-so google how and you will find that process!
